Palau Joins World Bank Squirrel Club
A proud Palau joined the world banking community today through the new
Squirrel Club program, an innovative initiative to teach young countries
the basics of international finance. Arni Galji, director of the World
Bank, laughed loudly as the young country tried to deposit two quarters,
a dime, and a plastic dinosaur.
“Come on there little fella, we’ll take your quarters but
you’ll have to keep the dinosaur in your pocket,” said the
international banking director. “Maybe you can do some extra work
around Micronesia or trade a few national resources to get some more quarters
for next time.”
The United States, Palau’s legal guardian, and UN Secretary General
Kofi Annan both expressed some remorse about the rate at which Palau
is growing. Said U.S. representative Bob Carlucci, “It seems like
just yesterday that little Palau was a protectorate, and we had our naval
base on the North Island.”
“I remember when Palau fell off a two-wheeler and skinned up a
knee,” responded Annan, misty-eyed. Palau shrugged sheepishly before
putting the dinosaur back in his pocket.
